Non-Hermitian quantum mechanics: the case of bound state scattering theory

چکیده
Excited bound states are often understood within scattering based theories as resulting from the collision of a particle on a target via a short-range potential. We show that the resulting formalism is non-Hermitian and describe the Hilbert spaces and metric operator relevant to a correct formulation of such theories. The structure and tools employed are the same that have been introduced in current works dealing with PT-symmetric and quasi-Hermitian problems. The relevance of the non-Hermitian formulation to practical computations is assessed by introducing a nonHermiticity index. We give a numerical example involving scattering by a short-range potential in a Coulomb field for which it is seen that even for a small but non-negligible non-Hermiticity index the non-Hermitian character of the problem must be taken into account. The computation of physical quantities in the relevant Hilbert spaces is also discussed. PACS numbers: 03.65.Ca,03.65.Nk Non-Hermitian quantum mechanics: the case of bound state scattering theory 2

On Scattering from Localized non-Hermitian Potentials
We highlight the conceptual issues that arise when one applies the quasi-Hermitian framework to analyze scattering from localized non-Hermitian potentials, in particular complex square-wells or deltafunctions. When treated in the framework of conventional quantum mechanics, these potentials are generally considered as effective theories, in which probability is not conserved because of processe...
متن کاملInterface between Hermitian and non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in a model calculation
We consider the interaction between the Hermitian world, represented by a real delta-function potential −αδ(x), and the non-Hermitian world, represented by a PT-symmetric pair of delta functions with imaginary coefficients iβ(δ(x−L)− δ(x+L)). In the context of standard quantum mechanics, the effect of the introduction of the imaginary delta functions on the bound-state energy of the real delta ...

The spectrum of the Hermitian Hamiltonian 1 2p 2 + 12m 2x2 + gx4 (g > 0), which describes the quantum anharmonic oscillator, is real and positive. The non-Hermitian quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian H = 1 2p 2 + 12m 2x2 − gx4, where the coupling constant g is real and positive, is PT -symmetric. As a consequence, the spectrum ofH is known to be real and positive as well. Here, it is shown that the...

Complex, non-Hermitian potentials V (x) 6= V (x) can often generate the standard, normalizable bound states ψ(x). Unfortunately, the idea [based on the use of a nonlocal ad hoc metric Θ(x, x) 6= δ(x − x) in Hilbert space] cannot directly be transferred to scattering [cf. H. F. Jones, Phys. Rev. D 78, 065032 (2008)]. We complement and modify this result by showing that a return to the causal and...

One-dimensional unitary scattering controlled by non-Hermitian (typically, PT -symmetric) quantum Hamiltonians H 6= H is considered. Treating these operators via Runge–Kutta approximation, our three-Hilbert-space formulation of quantum theory is reviewed as explaining the unitarity of scattering. Our recent paper on bound states [Znojil M., SIGMA 5 (2009), 001, 19 pages, arXiv:0901.0700] is com...
